The Church calls each member of Christ’s body-priest, deacon, and layperson to participate in the ministry of consolation: to care for the dying, to pray for the dead, and to comfort those who mourn.”OCF#8 The Bereavement Ministry is just that: praying for the dead and comforting those who mourn, one of the Spiritual Works of Mercy. Depending on the needs of the family, the Bereavement Minister, under the guidance and supervision of their Pastor and on behalf of the parish: Prays for members of the parish community who have died and for their families. Meets with the bereaved family to offer support and guidance as they plan the funeral liturgy. Visits the family and friends of the deceased at the wake to offer support and prayer on behalf of their parish community. Serves as a greeter, lector or Eucharistic Minister at the funeral liturgy if needed or requested by the family.


NOTE: This formation requires ministers to participate in 12 hours of comprehensive training. Potential Ministers must attend the two Saturday sessions in order to receive a Certificate of Completion which will be submitted to their respective parish. Registration is required prior to the start of the formation. The parish pastor must also sign the registration form acknowledging the participant’s attendance.


Evangelina (Eva) Bustamante, M.S., Thanatology, Coordinator of the Bereavement Ministry, which has been recognized by the Archdiocese of Chicago since 2002. At the present time, Eva has worked with over 80 of the Archdiocesan parishes and instructed over 500 parish volunteers under the guidance of their pastors. Eva will consult with parishes on site to discern the needs they wish to address,
