Pope Francis has famously said, “This is the mission of the Church: to heal the wounds of the heart, to open doors, to free people, to say that God is good, God forgives all, God is the Father, God is affectionate, God always waits for us.” If we as Catholics are to invite first, and accompany second, how do we begin a conversation on a more “radical” way of being welcoming? If all our neighbors, the whole of our larger community is now our mission territory, how do we begin to listen to people’s real lives and struggles, with both authenticity and Christ-like compassion? How might we invite others to a deeper relationship with Christ, while remaining true to our faith Tradition?
This four-part series seeks to identify those who might not feel fully welcome in the Catholic Church today: the immigrant/migrant population, ‘modern’ families, women, and the LGBTQ community. We gather, not to solve any problems, but as people of faith – to listen, to bear witness to Christ, and to perhaps walk away with a deeper understanding of our neighbors.
Dr. Avis Clendenen is Professor Emerita of Religious Studies at Saint Xavier University in Chicago where she serves as Special Assistant to the President. Avis gives days of reflection and retreats that integrate the arts and technology, exploring the intersections of Christian spirituality and depth psychology. She has a long history with the emerging roles of women in the Catholic Church.
