Pope Francis has famously said, “This is the mission of the Church: to heal the wounds of the heart, to open doors, to free people, to say that God is good, God forgives all, God is the Father, God is affectionate, God always waits for us.” If we as Catholics are to invite first, and accompany second, how do we begin a conversation on a more “radical” way of being welcoming? If all our neighbors, the whole of our larger community is now our mission territory, how do we begin to listen to people’s real lives and struggles, with both authenticity and Christ-like compassion? How might we invite others to a deeper relationship with Christ, while remaining true to our faith Tradition?

This four-part series seeks to identify those who might not feel fully welcome in the Catholic Church today: the immigrant/migrant population, ‘modern’ families, women, and the LGBTQ community. We gather, not to solve any problems, but as people of faith – to listen, to bear witness to Christ, and to perhaps walk away with a deeper understanding of our neighbors.

Jeanne Lassandrello is commissioned as a Lay Ecclesial Minister in the Archdiocese of Chicago. She served as Pastoral Associate and Director of Religious Education at St Christopher Parish in Midlothian for 8 years. She is currently the Pastoral Associate and Director of Religious Education at St Germaine Parish in Oak Lawn. Jeanne earned a Master of Arts Degree in Pastoral Ministry at Catholic Theological Union, and is presently a candidate for the Doctorate of Ministry from the University of St Mary of the Lake.
